Fact one. From miner to doctor of sciences

Valery Ivanov was born on July 19, 1961 in Luhansk. His path began with hard physical labor: at the age of 17 he worked at the Voroshilovgradska 1-2 mine. This experience shaped not only his character, but also his sensitivity to social issues, which would later manifest themselves in his scientific and journalistic works. In 1983, he completed his studies at the Luhansk Pedagogical Institute with a degree in History - this is where his progress in the field of humanities began.

Fact two. He has been working at the Institute of Journalism of the Kyiv National University for almost 40 years.

Since 1989, Ivanov has linked his career with the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, where he went from a postgraduate student to the head of the department. From 1995 to 1999, he was the deputy director of the Institute of Journalism for scientific work, and since 2007 he has been the head of the Department of Advertising and Public Relations . His influence on the formation of journalism education in Ukraine is difficult to overestimate - he is not only a teacher, but also one of the architects of modern university media education in Ukraine.

Fact three. A doctor of philological sciences who "got away with it" in information manipulation

In 1996, Valery Ivanov defended his doctoral dissertation on the methodology of content analysis of mass communication, a topic that would later become the leading one in his scientific work. His research combines philological precision with social context: Ivanov studies not only what is said and how, but also why, to whom, and with what effect.

Fact four. Author of over 500 scientific papers

Valery Ivanov's scientific output includes over 500 scientific works, including monographs, textbooks, manuals, brochures, and articles. He formed an academic platform for the study of mass communication in Ukraine. Among his most famous works are "Content Analysis: Methodology and Research Techniques" (1994), "Sociology of Mass Communication" (reprinted three times), and "Information Legislation" - a work at the intersection of journalism and law.

 

Fact Five. The Permanent President of the Academy of Ukrainian Press

Since 2001, Ivanov has headed the Academy of the Ukrainian Press (AUP), an influential public organization that promotes media education, critical thinking, and journalistic standards. It was under his leadership that the AUP became one of the main platforms in Ukraine for improving media literacy, developing educational materials, and training for educators and journalists. He is not just an administrator — he shapes the content and narrative of all AUP initiatives.

Fact six. One of the first researchers in Ukraine in content analysis

Valeriy Ivanov is one of the first to systematically introduce the method of content analysis as a tool for studying media into scientific circulation in Ukraine. His 1994 monograph “Content Analysis: Methodology and Research Techniques” became a starting point for domestic applied media analytics . This tool is actively used today by sociologists, political scientists, PR specialists, and fact checkers . It was Ivanov who set the framework for scientific accuracy in a field that for a long time was based mainly on intuition and value judgments.

Fact number seven. One of the pioneers in implementing journalistic ethics standards in Ukraine

In 2006, Ivanov, together with Volodymyr Serdyuk, wrote the textbook "Journalistic Ethics" - the first systematic manual on this topic for Ukrainian students. In 2012, a workshop was published, created together with Serhiy Shturkhetsky . Ivanov consistently emphasizes that journalism is not only information, but also responsibility, in particular to society, the heroes of publications and the professional community.

Fact eight. Participant in professional and expert communities

Valeriy Ivanov is not only a professor , but also an active participant in public life. He is a member of the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine, until 2021 he was a member of the Commission on Journalistic Ethics, participates in the activities of ECREA (European Association of Communication Researchers), cooperates with the Center for a Free Press. He is a permanent member of the Public Council under the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Freedom of Speech, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Ukrainian National Competition of Professional Journalism "Honor of the Profession", which confirms his authority as an expert on information policy.

Fact Nine. A Guide to Critical Thinking and Countering Disinformation

During the full-scale Russian invasion, Valery Ivanov focused his efforts on combating disinformation, in particular Russian propaganda. He organized and conducted numerous educational events, including a webinar as part of the Global Media Literacy Week (October 2024), the “ STOPmanipulator ” training (March-April 2025), and the online forum “Development of Media Education : Regional Dimension” (January 2025). His position is clear: “Our task is to mobilize educators to counter hostile lies, propaganda, and manipulation.”

Fact Ten. The Founder of a Journalistic Dynasty

Ivanov comes from an intelligent family: his father is a mining engineer, his mother is a chemical engineer. His wife is a professor, Doctor of Pedagogical Sciences. And his son, Denis Ivanov, became an investigative journalist , continuing the family business.
